Waiting for Shinigami
Epilogue At least every two weeks, they all went dancing. Heero and Duo, Quatre and Trowa, Wufei and Veruca, Miss Gracie and a "gentleman friend" from her senior group, along with whoever else they could drag, bribe, or coerce along. On the day Miss Gracie got out of the hospital, they didn't even go anywhere, just turned on some music outside of her apartment building and grabbed whoever was closest, be it pedestrian, jogger, dog-walker, even whole families found themselves at the mercy of the group. Once a good party got going, anytime someone tried to break it up, Duo, Heero, or Wufei would flash a Preventers badge and tell them it was "under control". Heero smiled to himself over the memory. Over so many memories. Quatre blushing when he accidentally walked in on the little blonde and Trowa making out in the bathroom at the office. Wufei pretending to be a hopeless dancer so Veruca would have to "teach" him. Trowa teasingly demanding a portion of Heero's winnings from the office betting pool.(3) Sally telling Wufei to tell that girl, meaning Veruca, he loved her or leave her the hell alone, and then watching in astonishment as he swept over and declared his love firmly. Miss Gracie trying to learn some of the newest dance steps, and teaching them some of the old ones. Hilde not knowing whether to punch Duo or hug him when she saw him again, and ending up doing both at the same time. And speaking of Duo, everything seemed to happen when Duo came into his life again. His memories of Duo were of when he laughed, the way he fussed over Kumi, the way his eyes softened when they talked about children, and of the moments they spend alone together. And no matter how many of those moments he had, he wanted more. Duo still took his breath away, and always would. No matter how clearly Heero remember Duo's features, he was always surprised by his lover's beauty. Even more so by his mind and his heart. He looked around, but his love had not made it to the dance club yet. Working late again, no doubt. For someone who hadn't wanted to be a Preventer, Duo took his job very seriously. Usually it was Heero who had to pry him away from the desk, and that was saying something. Still, Duo believed in playing at least as hard as he worked, so there was no doubt that he would show up eventually. Heero just wanted to be near him now, and wondered how much longer he would have to wait. Then, he saw him. As beautiful as always and dressed
to kill, both literally and figuratively. He was a god, but not of
death, not anymore, though that would always be a part of him. He
was a god of beauty, and of light, and of love, a maker of peace,
and the guardian of Heero's dreams and his heart. This was a dark
god Heero found himself of his knees, crushing Duo against him as though he'd thought him gone. Then he pulled the violet-eyed beauty down to him and drank in his lips like a man dying of thirst. At last he pulled back and looked long into the eyes of his god, the one he had rescued and who had, in turn, rescued him. While he had never succumbed to the death god, neither had he truly escaped him. But that didn't matter, because by some miracle, he had done something better; he had captured his heart. He felt like his whole life had led up to this moment, looking at Duo and not caring about the people around them staring. Shinigami finally had his soul, and it was wonderful. He said the only thing he could think to say, and hoped it would be explanation enough. "I've been waiting for you," ~ oOo ~
